Osteria N° 1

The kitchen

We don't have a fixed menu.We have a market.

Every morning we decide what gets cooked. The fish arrives, the vegetables arrive, the pasta gets rolled. What's written on the blackboard by the door tonight wasn't there yesterday, and may not be there tomorrow.

How to find out what's on today

  1. 01

    The blackboard at the entrance

The day's menu is written by hand on the board next to the door, at Kreuzbergstraße 71. The oldest and most reliable method there is.

  2. 02

    A phone call

Call +49 (30) 5779 2999 between noon and midnight: we'll happily tell you what came in this morning and what we'd recommend tonight.

  3. 03

    Ask at the table

Once you sit down we'll talk you through the day's dishes. Tell us what you like or what you need to avoid, and we'll guide you.

What never changes

Six fixed points. Everything else turns around them, differently every day.

01

The pizza

It is how a lot of Berliners found this courtyard in the first place — and the reason they keep coming back. It has never left the menu and it is not going to.

  • Since 1977
  • Always on the menu
02

House-made pasta

Rolled in house every day: tagliatelle, ravioli, gnocchi, depending on what the season asks for. The sauces change with the market; the technique doesn't.

  • Fresh daily
  • Seasonal fillings
03

The fish

It arrives fresh and it dictates the evening's menu. Sometimes a whole sea bass from the oven, sometimes a fritto, sometimes served raw. We don't freeze it and we don't keep it for the next day.

  • Fresh, never frozen
  • Different every day
04

The meat

Selected cuts on the grill, simple cooking, sides that don't get in the way. The steaks have been here for decades and are still among the most ordered things in the courtyard.

  • Grilled
  • Selected cuts
05

The garden

Vegetarian and vegan dishes that aren't an afterthought: seasonal vegetables treated with the same care as everything else. Ask at the table — the day's choice is almost always wider than what's written down.

  • Vegetarian
  • Vegan
  • Seasonal
06

The cellar

Italian wines chosen region by region, prosecco always on ice, beer on tap and coffee made properly. And gelato, which in the courtyard in summer is close to compulsory.

  • Italian wines
  • Prosecco
  • Beer on tap

Allergies and intolerances

There are always vegetarian and vegan options. We do not make gluten-free pizza. Tell us about allergies when you order — better still, when you book — and the kitchen will plan around it. We won't promise a completely allergen-free environment, but we will be straight with you about what we can and can't guarantee.

  • Vegetarian
  • Vegan
  • Children's portions

The best way to find out what's on tonight is to sit down.
