Osteria N° 1

Kreuzbergstraße 71 · Berlin

Berlin's most Italian courtyard

Since 1977, behind a gate in Kreuzberg: four spaces under old trees, pasta rolled that morning, and a menu that changes every day.

About us

Not a restaurant with a garden. A garden with an osteria inside it.

You walk through an ordinary gate on Kreuzbergstraße and the city cuts out. In front of you: trees nearly as old as the restaurant, lights strung through the branches, a well-worn foosball table, tables laid all the way to the back of the courtyard.

On this side of the gate people eat the way they eat in Italy: slowly, with their hands, talking loudly. It has been like this since 1977, and we've never seen a reason to change it.

Four ways to sit down

The same courtyard changes four times: shaded in summer, warm in winter, lit from above at night. Tell us where you'd rather sit when you book.

The Hof

The courtyard under the trees

The heart of the place: an inner courtyard enclosed by buildings, with trees that grew up alongside the restaurant and lights strung through the branches. Children play here while the adults finish the wine, and in summer people eat late while the city stays outside the gate.

The historic dining room

Where it all started in 1977

Dark wood, white tablecloths, walls that have filled up over the years with faces from the neighbourhood: artists, actors, people who have always lived here. The most intimate room — the right one when it's raining outside, or when the conversation matters more than the view.

The summer garden

Ivy walls and white chairs

A second garden, more open and brighter, with ivy-covered walls and oleander in pots. This is where the light lasts longest: perfect for an aperitivo, for long tables, and for anyone who wants the sun until the last minute.

The winter garden

Covered, heated, open almost always

Glass, exposed brick and warm light: the winter garden lets you sit outside even in November. It's also the space we hand over exclusively most often — it closes in on itself without losing any of the courtyard's atmosphere.

The kitchen

The menu changes every day. The market decides, we listen.

We don't print a card that stays the same all year. The blackboard by the entrance tells you what arrived this morning: the fish, the vegetables in season, the pasta rolled a few hours ago. What never changes is where we start from.

The neighbourhood

At the foot of Kreuzberg hill

We're on the quiet side of Viktoriapark, two minutes from the waterfall and the monument at the top of the hill — the highest point in central Berlin. Bergmannkiez, the Marheineke market hall and Tempelhofer Feld are all walkable. The best way to use us: a walk in the park first, then the courtyard.
